There is a lot of group rides mostly on saturdays and sundays. At Cycle store, we like the saturday 7h30 or 8am Mechanics' Bay road ride. The ride is under 2h for 68km. A good 1h warm up than a catch-me-if-you-can for 40mn. You finish with a social 20mn cool down back to the start. Big group from 30 to 100 riders. |

45mn northwest of Auckland, woodhill forest is the Mecca of Mtbiking around AKL. A total of more than 100k of well groomed and marked singletracks. Lots of "north shore" obstacles under the trees' shade with bypasses. 5 long courses to choose from. Whatever the weather, woodhill is always rideable. At the parking lot, some rentals, a workshop, a little bike shop, a small restaurant, restrooms and water to clean the bike. Night rides and races very often. A little fee is asked to help the colunteers building ramps and jumps. The top ! |
Riverhead : 40mn north of Auckland, you can park anywhere around the forest and enter this playground. The place is faster and the gravelroads are wider. There is no map and you are welcome to improvise any route. A circuit follow the edge of the forest with lots of short cuts. When you enter the forest, you can enjoy some nice singletracks. Some are overgrown, some are slippery when wet and some are very technical. Other than these minor details, the field is complete nicely Woodhill with nice gradual climbs and fast straight sections. |
Hunua Ranges : 1h15mn east of Auckland, nested at the bottom of a dam into the hills, the 20k trail following the river to the south is the best MTB track you will find close to the big city. Very well maintained, it offers stunning ride and awesome views. It is marked and very easy to follow. The other track goes up north from the dam and is not a real MTB track. Even if you can still see the bike sign in the bush. After the ride and some insect repellant, enjoy a dip in the river very close by the car park. |
Whitford : 1h east of Auckland, you will hop over the gate to the archery place where the start of the trail is located. Whitford is a mix of woodhill and riverhead. The trails are not very well marked but are open and very rideable. There are some competitions happening there but the place is note as popular as it should be. It goes up and down all the time and is pretty bumpy. The road ride around whitford is very nice as well as the Maraetai beach up north. |
